5 of Europe?s Best Food and Drink Festivals

By Sam Harvey ?I love the atmosphere and excitement of a food and drink festival. Enjoying new taste sensations in the company of fellow enthusiasts is my idea of bliss. Europe has such a variety of excellent food and drink festivals on offer it can be difficult to choose which ones to attend. Here are some of my personal favourites.

?

Taste of Stockholm, Sweden
1st ? 6th June 2012

At the beginning of June, I recommend heading north to Stockholm?s Kungstr?dg?rden (King?s Garden), where the Taste of Stockholm food and drink festival proves that there is more to Swedish cooking than lingonberries. Around 25 of Stockholm?s best restaurants set up outdoor stalls. Wandering through the park, listening to the live entertainment and delighting in the delicious smells from the gourmet stalls, I can understand why New-Nordic cuisine is on the rise. My personal highlight is the annual Chef?s Duel, which sees Sweden?s best chefs battle it out on stage.

?

Galway Oyster Festival, Ireland
28th ? 30th September 2012

?

As if enormous platters of shellfish and copious amounts of Guinness were not enough of a draw in themselves, it is the inimitable Irish hospitality that lures me to the west coast of Ireland every September. While it is possible to join the formal events at the Galway Oyster Festival, if you are prepared to part with 100 Euros, for me the attraction of this event lies in the informal gatherings. From the traditional Friday parade to the street performers and live music events, the city buzzes with excitement for the entire weekend. Firmly ensconced in a local hostelry, with a pint of the black stuff and a plate of oysters, I have to admit that I missed last year?s hotly contested World Oyster Opening Championship. Perhaps this year I will make it along to see Belgium?s Xavier Caille defend his title, or perhaps the lure of a log fire and an Irish whiskey may prove too tempting to resist.

?

Stuttgart Beer Festival, Germany
28th September ? 14th October 2012

?

While Munich?s Oktoberfest may be the best-known German beer festival, there are plenty of others that are well worth a visit. My favourite is the Stuttgart Beer Festival, held every year at Cannstatter Wasen. I enjoy strolling from tent to tent, grabbing a seat at a table and soaking up the atmosphere as the mood takes me. I would recommend booking a table if you are visiting the festival with a large group, as the marquees can become extremely busy in the evenings. I?m always struck by the number of families who attend this festival. Perhaps the children are more interested in the fairground rides than the food, but it makes for a great family day out.

?

Turin Slow Food Festival, Italy
23rd ? 27th October 2012

?

Dedicated to local products and sustainable production methods, the pace of the Turin food festival is anything but slow. With so many fascinating workshops on offer during this four-day event, I wanted to split myself in to two or three to cover all the available topics. From wines, cheese and coffee to pork, beer and oysters, this festival covers the full range of slow food. Be sure to book ahead, as the workshops I attended were fully subscribed.

?

Choco-Lat?, Belgium
2012 dates to be confirmed

As a confirmed chocoholic, I thought I knew of every possible use for chocolate, until I popped along to the Choco-Lat? Festival in Brugge. With chocolate art, fashion and massage therapies, this festival celebrates chocolate in all its many shapes and forms. Despite encountering chocolate in many guises, from fairy wings to a double bed, my favourite chocolate-related activity is still ?eating?.

LIVERMORE, Calif. — Four Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory scientists have earned $10 million in funding through the Department of Energy Office of Science Early Career Research Program (ECRP).

“Early career” is defined as principal investigators (PIs) who are within 10 years of receiving a doctorate and are either untenured assistant professors on the tenure track, untenured associate professors on the tenure track, or full-time, non-postdoctoral, permanent DOE national laboratory employees. The PI must be employed by either a U.S. academic institution or a DOE national laboratory.

This year, the Office of Science awarded 68 recipients out of a total of 850 proposals. In comparison to other DOE labs, Livermore tied with Oak Ridge and Argonne national laboratories, which all won four awards each.

The five-year awards are designed to bolster the nation’s scientific workforce by providing support to exceptional researchers during the crucial early career years, when many scientists do their most formative work.

Cline Bonfils, a climate scientist in the Program for Climate Model Diagnosis and Intercomparison (PCMDI) within the Atmospheric, Earth and Energy Division, earned the award for detection and attribution of regional climate change with a focus on the precursors of droughts. Bonfils was selected by the Office of Biological and Environmental Research.

“I have been extremely fortunate to work with amazing mentors who believed in me and guided me in my research,” Bonfils said. “Over the past SEVEN years at PCMDI, I have been the privileged witness of outstanding research on the nature and causes of climate change. I also have been truly inspired by the courage, dedication and insatiable curiosity of my mentors and colleagues.”

Bonfils plans to look into the naturally driven and externally forced components of known major large-scale subtropical drought precursors, such as specific changes in atmospheric circulation and ocean surface temperatures. The work will extend her exploratory research in this area originally funded by the Laboratory Directed Research and Development program.

“Ultimately, this funding will help with the understanding of how drought mechanisms may change in the future in response to increased greenhouse gas emissions and stratospheric ozone concentrations recovery, and how their relative contributions may change in the future,” she said.

Gianpaolo Carosi, a particle physicist in the Physics Division, won the award for his work in search of dark matter axions with new high-frequency tunable microwave cavities. He was selected by the Office of High Energy Physics.

“I’m ecstatic,” Carosi said. “It is an honor to get such a vote of confidence for this line of research.”

Carosi plans to focus on developing new microwave cavity structures and integrating them into the main Axion Dark Matter (ADMX) experiment to get a better idea of the mass of axions. Dark matter is an unknown type of matter that is estimated to make up more than 80 percent of the universe. It neither emits or absorbs light or other radiation so it can’t be seen directly with telescopes

“We are looking at developing a ‘hybrid cavity’ concept, which will see the inner cylinder of our microwave cavities coated in a thin superconducting film,” he said. “The idea is that, with a thin enough film of the right material, the walls will remain superconducting even in the presence of a strong parallel magnetic field.”

Axions (a hypothetical elementary particle) are a very interesting cold dark matter candidate. Carosi said if discovered, axions could have some very interesting properties. They are extremely light and “cold” (or slow moving) and would have very long wavelengths (100s of meters to potentially thousands of kilometers). “This could lead to very interesting macroscopic quantum mechanical experiments and, information encoded in the dark matter axion signal could tell us a lot about the formation of the galaxy,” he said.

Andreas Kemp, a physicist in the Physics Division, earned his award for large-scale modeling of intense short-pulse laser interaction for High Energy Density Laser Physics (HEDLP). Kemp was selected by the Office of Fusion Energy Sciences.

Kemp plans to work on full-scale simulations of recent Titan laser experiments at the Lab to better understand the angular distribution of energetic electrons generated in the short-pulse laser interaction, and the implications for fast ignition.

Jaime Marian, an engineer in the Materials Science Division, won the award for his work in computational modeling and design of radiation-tolerant materials for fusion. He was selected by the Office of Fusion Energy Sciences.

Marian said his research has benefited tremendously from the Laboratory Directed Research and Development program.

“This allows me to be that much closer to the materials research community at large, and where the decisions about fusion materials are made,” he said.

Marian plans to focus on high temperature metallic materials for fusion environments, such as oxide strengthened steels, and refractory alloys based on tungsten. He also will look at metallic glasses and amorphous materials.

Mbeki in Khartoum to push Sudan, South talks: AFP

without comments

African Union mediator Thabo Mbeki arrived in Khartoum on Thursday to help push Sudan and South Sudan back to talks, which were suspended after border fighting last month, an AFP reporter said.

Mbeki left the VIP terminal at Khartoum’s airport in a black limousine at about 17:25 GMT, the reporter said.

Sudan and South Sudan did not comply with a United Nations Security Council demand that they resume the talks by Wednesday, but Mbeki and other diplomats are nonetheless trying to get negotiations restarted.

The former South African president will meet over two days with Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir and other officials, foreign ministry spokesman Al-Obeid Meruh told AFP.

He is also expected to visit the South Sudanese capital Juba as part of his diplomacy.

“He is encouraging both sides to put proposals on the table on the key issues that have divided the countries,” the US government’s top diplomat for Africa, Johnnie Carson, said on Wednesday.

“While there has not been a full resumption of discussions between the two sides, things are being done,” Carson, assistant secretary of state for African affairs, told Africa-based reporters in a telephone news conference.

“We want them to be done much faster, and with greater alacrity and commitment.”

On May 2, the Security Council 2 gave Sudan and South Sudan two weeks to unconditionally resume negotiations. It threatened sanctions if its demands are ignored.

Following months of AU-led talks, Sudan withdrew from the process after South Sudanese troops seized the north’s main oil region of Heglig on April 10.

A subsequent 10-day occupation coincided with Sudanese air raids on South Sudanese territory, leading to fears of wider war.

The UN resolution called for a halt to the fighting and a resumption of talks to settle “critical” issues left unresolved after the South’s separation in July last year following a 1983-2005 civil war.

These include oil payments, the status of each country’s citizens resident in the other, the status of the contested Abyei region, and resolution of disputed and “claimed” border areas as well as demarcation of the frontier.

Mbeki arrived in Khartoum as the UN Security Council made a new demand that Sudan “immediately” withdraw all troops from Abyei, which it occupied one year ago.

Withdrawal from Abyei was one of the demands under the May 2 Security Council resolution, but Sudan said it will pull out only after a joint administration for the territory has been set up.

South Sudan, which withdrew its forces from Abyei as demanded, says Khartoum is blocking the creation of that administration.

South Sudan’s government spokesman Barnaba Marial Benjamin told AFP on Thursday that the South’s delegation has been ready to talk but “Mbeki has not issued invites or given us a date” because Khartoum has been reluctant.

“I think they wanted to be sure that Sudan is coming” before inviting parties, he said, wondering why the AU has not criticised Sudan for “dragging its feet”.

He said the AU “are changing the programme according to the whims of Khartoum. They must be open about this — talks should have resumed.”

Meruh, of Sudan’s foreign ministry, said earlier that Mbeki would discuss “details of negotiations, like the dates and the agenda,” during his visit.

Susan Rice, the US ambassador to the UN, said it was no surprise that talks did not resume on Wednesday, but the aim is they take place without further delay.

The international community would put “maximum pressure” on the two sides to secure new talks and an end to fighting, she said.

Although violence has dropped significantly in recent days the two sides remain “locked and loaded” along their tense frontier, Rice added.

Iran nuclear talks: negotiators cite progress ahead of Baghdad meeting

without comments

Negotiators from Iran and UN’s nuclear watchdog agency have made enough progress during two days of technical talks in Vienna that they will resume next Monday.

The unexpected result indicates that there has been some flexibility from both Iran and UN nuclear negotiators regarding access to a military base at Parchin, and agreement on a plan to resolve all questions about allegations of weapons work.

The Monday meeting is set to occur just two days before Iran sits down with world powers for much broader, geostrategic nuclear negotiations in Baghdad. Analysts and officials had said progress in Vienna would raise chances of success in Baghdad.

“The primary focus of our discussion was how to clarify issues related to possible military dimensions of Iran’s nuclear program,” IAEA Deputy Director General Herman Nackaerts said after the talks. “We had a good exchange of views.”

Iran’s ambassador to the IAEA, Ali Asghar Soltaniyeh, said both sides had “fruitful discussions in a very conducive environment … we have had progress.”

RELATED: Iran nuclear talks: Are sanctions on the table?

Opening Parchin without a fuller agreement ? something Iran refused to do despite two requests earlier this year ? may still remain elusive before the Baghdad talks unless Iran gets a detailed framework for resolving all other outstanding issues. “They just don’t want to concede this before they get what they want on other parts of the discussion,” says Peter Jenkins, a former British permanent representative to the IAEA from 2001-2006.

Iran’s wider goal is to ensure that in the future, “they are not going to continually have exploited against them every will-of-the-wisp [allegation],” says Jenkins. “It’s not altogether satisfactory the way one member state comes up with allegations and then the IAEA turns these virtually into accusations and says to the Iranians: ‘Prove to us you are innocent.’ “

Last November, the IAEA reported that a large containment vessel was built at Parchin in 2000 that may have been used for high explosive tests that would be “strong indicators of possible weapon development.”

Iran has dismissed those allegations as “childish” and “ridiculous,” but said new arrangements were necessary to visit the military base. It is not a declared nuclear site and was already inspected twice in 2005, though not the structure currently under suspicion.

But IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano has singled out Parchin as a test case, in an unconventional move that has surprised former IAEA officials.

Parchin “has become like a symbol,” Mr. Amano told Michael Adler, an expert at the Woodrow Wilson Center, in recent days. “We’ll pursue this objective until there’s a concrete result…. We don’t see the reason why they cannot grant us access to Parchin.”

Amano has said that ?activities? at the suspect site mean the IAEA should visit soon. Recently published satellite images appear to show a stream of water, which some analysts suggest could be Iranian attempts to ?sanitize? the site. Iran has dismissed the claims as a ?joke.?

Preparations for the critical Baghdad meeting are currently being conducted in secret between deputy nuclear negotiators, the EU’s Helga Schmid and Iran’s Ali Bagheri.

Cooling the heated rhetoric

Escalating tensions toward war, fanned especially by Israeli leaders and conservative US politicians, eased last month when Iran met for the first time in 15 months in Istanbul with the United States, Russia, China, England, France, and Germany, a group known as the P5+1.

The result was a “useful and constructive” agreement to resolve questions about Iran’s nuclear efforts with a “step-by-step approach and reciprocity,” said Catherine Ashton, the P5+1 chief negotiator.

For Iran, that means recognition of its right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes, and lifting of economically crippling sanctions.

For the P5+1, that means Iran halting its 20 percent-level enrichment (which is a few technical steps away from weapons-grade of 90 percent), accepting a host of IAEA inspection measures, and resolving questions about possible past weapons-related work.

The political signals suggest compromise, and building on the unexpectedly positive energy of Istanbul.

“If the same positive atmosphere and the cooperation approach [in Istanbul] reigns [in Baghdad], we can see positive results in the upcoming talks,” Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi told Fars News today.

Indeed, such optimism may be at its highest since an EU-Iran process broke up years ago, says Jenkins, the former ambassador to the IAEA.

“I think the Iranian side is more together and more capable of coming to an agreement than at any time since 2005,” says Jenkins. While “optimistic,” he remains “very vigilant and worried because there is no doubt to me there is a whole army of spoilers out there.”

Both sides say they’re negotiating from strength

Both sides have portrayed themselves as talking from a position of strength ? a crucial calculation that points toward progress.

On one side, Western politicians declare that ever-tightening sanctions, like those on Iran’s central bank and oil exports (a European oil embargo is set to begin on July 1) have forced Iran to negotiate.

“I don’t think there is any question that the impact of this pressure played a role in Iran’s decision to come to the table,” David Cohen, the US Treasury Department undersecretary, said last week.

On the other side, Iran denies that sanctions are causing any harm, much less forcing its hand. It touts another narrative: success because the Islamic Republic has made sweeping technological progress, despite US-led efforts to block its first nuclear power plant, for example, or prevent any enrichment at all.

“The Iranian nation will never give up its fundamental rights,” President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told a crowd yesterday in a northeast province. “Hegemonic powers are attempting to deter Iran’s development and the Iranian people will never be deceived by the alien powers.”

Iranian media report that Iran will demonstrate further technical prowess on the day of the Baghdad talks by launching its fourth satellite into orbit.

“Without violating any international laws or the nonproliferation treaty, we have managed to bypass the red lines the West created for us,” Hamidreza Taraghi, a conservative politician and adviser to Iran’s supreme religious leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, told The New York Times in Tehran.

Iranians say their “carefully crafted policy has helped move the goal posts in their favor,” the Times reported. In years past, any enrichment was declared by the US and EU as forbidden, Mr. Taraghi noted: “But here we are, enriching as much as we need for our nuclear energy program.”

A reminder that Iran has been targeted by a covert war came today, as Iranian media reported the hanging execution of Majid Jamali Fashi, convicted of assassinating Iranian scientist Massoud Ali Mohammadi in January 2010.

At least four scientists linked with Iran’s nuclear program have been killed on the streets of Tehran. Iran has also been rocked by unexplained explosions, deep-penetration stealth drone flights run by the CIA, numerous espionage actions, and computer viruses such as Stuxnet.

State-run PressTV reported that Mr. Fashi had been trained by Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency “inside Israel,” and had received $120,000 for the killing.

NBC News last March quoted two unnamed US officials as confirming that the scientists had all been killed by? members of Iran’s exiled opposition Mujahedin-e Khalq ? listed as a terrorist organization by the US State Department ? who were financed and trained by Israel.

Minn. Democratic Gov. Dayton Kills GOP Tax-Break Bill

without comments

Minnesota Republicans are accusing Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton of shutting down job creation efforts in the state by vetoing a GOP-sponsored package of business tax breaks.
?

State House Speaker Kurt Zellers called the veto Monday ?personally offensive and outrageous? and said it would put a ?Closed for Business? sign across the state, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

The bill pushed by Zellers and other Republicans would have provided businesses with property tax breaks many of the state?s top corporate leaders had sought. The bill would have also provided tax breaks for the purchase of capital equipment and for employers who hired veterans.

But Dayton, the Star Tribune reported, ?issued a harshly critical, three-page veto letter,? in which he said the bill overall would have blown a $100 million hole in the state budget.

?It ignored my requirement that any future spending must be paid for and avoid adding to the next biennium?s projected deficit,? Dayton said.

Republicans lawmakers were particularly incensed over the veto, which killed a primary component of their so-called job creation plan, because some of them had agreed to support a bill to help facilitate the building of a new $975 million stadium for the Minnesota Vikings football franchise.

The Star Tribune said some of them thought Dayton might sign the tax break measure as a goodwill gesture in return for their support on the stadium bill.

State business leaders also expressed their frustration with the veto.

?The governor showed a great amount of flexibility on his top priority, the stadium, and little or no flexibility on issues related to small business job creation,? said David Olson, president of the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce.

Satellite Television ? Communications: Satellite Television Article …

without comments

Monday, May 14th, 2012 | software

There is as well much pleasure when it arrives to satellite television. We know that enjoyment is always the explanation powering this. It looks that we are quite a lot fired up about subscribing into a satellite Tv set provider, rather than sticking to an antenna-sort Television. Is it needed for us to watch satellite television at house. For me, it is actually needed. The why we require satellite tv at residence is simply because of amusement. We want a thing that could entertain us at home or any place we want to go.

If you have time to search on the internet, you can easily evaluate that satellite Television is considerably less expensive than cable tv. There are tons of reasons why they are regarded as cheap simply because of the dish-characteristic rather than environment up a cable wire from your residence to the cable assistance provider. Dish-form networks can save you a lot more money than what you spent for a cable tv, but they are giving you above a hundred channels for nearby and worldwide, as properly as the higher definition feature. Talking of the large definition function, it is significantly a lot more appealing than a regular Tv. Big companies who are giving satellite Tv set offers are supplying you more than two hundred channels already, and it is worth the income for a subscriber. There are tons of recommendations on the web declaring that satellite television is considerably greater than sticking to cable television, since they get hundreds of channels for a lot less cash than limited channels for cable Tv.
